Dear Friend,
I’m writing to give an update on the studio, 954DMC.
We have been working really hard over the past couple months figuring out our reopen plan and moving forward in the Age of Corona.
The slow down and the time of the shutdown has allowed us to really think deeply and to look at this as an opportunity to rethink the model.
So at this time, we have decided to close and to rethink what our next phase could be and how best to serve this community in an era where there’s great uncertainty about safety, how to move together safely, how to find community in movement safely. Things that I don’t take lightly.
I’ve had many conversations over the past few months with different artists and different community organizers on this subject and I’m not going to undermine the largeness of the responsibility I feel I have as a space purveyor for people to dance, and to teach, to rehearse, to perform, to gather and to share ideas. It’s a huge responsibility that I feel and the weight of that in the era of this pandemic has not been ignored.
So, eleven years is a long time for a relationship with hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people who have gathered in the space from all over the world.
We have danced with so many beautiful people and I have to say thank you.
Thank you for trusting the vision.
Thank you for believing that an 1140 square foot space could be the home for movement and to allow dancers living with Parkinson’s to express their joy.
Thank you to every single artist, performer, parent, kid, actor, director who has come into this space and said, “Yeah, we can make magic happen here.”
Because that’s what it feels like, that it’s been about eleven years of magic and I know that I have learned so much as an artist, as an organizer, as a community member. I’ve learned so much about people, I’ve learned so much about being an artist, I’ve learned so much about myself and doing so much more than I ever thought was possible: founding and creating a dance festival and dance programs and after school dance with kids. It’s been amazing.
It’s Philadelphia, not Hawaii, but I’m going to say aloha, because I’m not going anywhere in that sense. We just want to figure out how to do it better. Just because something’s been done one way doesn’t mean that it’s the only way. And as scientists figure out and help pave our road out of these challenging times, we want to give space and time for that and not feel like we’re just hurtling forward on someone else’s time clock.
If we find a way to return to partner with you in providing space for movement, we want to make sure that we know that we’re doing it right.
So for now, I love you, thank you, keep dancing. Even if it’s in your living room. We’ll definitely help with that. If you have any questions on anything related to “How do I dance now?” “How do I find a class?” Whatever, shoot me an email, [email protected]. Let me know. If I have an answer, I will give it. I always have an opinion, so you’ll hear that :)
